Frequently asked questions
How do I convert an MP4 to an MP3?
Drop the video in above, leave the format on MP3, choose a bitrate, and press Extract MP3. The audio track is pulled out on our server and comes back as a download. There is no account, no watermark, and nothing to install.
Does converting a video to MP3 lose quality?
Yes, a little. The audio inside a video is already compressed, so making an MP3 of it is a second lossy pass over sound that has already been through one, and no bitrate you pick can recover detail the video never carried. If you want the audio exactly as it was, choose "Original track, untouched" instead.
What does the "original track, untouched" option do?
It copies the audio stream the video was already carrying into its own file without decoding or re-encoding a single sample, so the sound is identical to the source. It is the fastest option and usually the smallest file. The file type follows the video: an MP4 normally gives you .m4a, a WebM gives you .opus or .ogg. If that track cannot be housed on its own, the job is refused with a message rather than quietly re-encoded.
How large and how long can the video be?
One video per job, up to 50 MB, and up to 60 minutes of running time. Common MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM, MKV, AVI, MPEG, OGV, FLV and transport stream files are accepted, and the video has to contain an audio track.
Why is the WAV so much larger than the video?
WAV is uncompressed, so it costs roughly 10 MB for every minute of CD-quality stereo sound whatever the video's audio was. It is there for editing software that wants plain PCM. A WAV that would come back too large to serve is worked out from the length and refused before any conversion starts, with a message pointing you at MP3.
What happens to my video after the conversion?
It is uploaded over HTTPS, used only for this one job, and deleted from our server automatically about an hour later. The audio you download carries none of the video's tags: a title, or the name of the software that made the recording, is left behind with the video.
