Password protect and unlock PDF guides

4 guides

PDF passwords are simple to use and widely misunderstood. There are actually two different protections in the spec: a password that stops the file opening at all, and an owner restriction that lets anyone open the file but blocks printing or copying. People hit problems because those two look identical from the outside and are removed in completely different ways. These guides separate them clearly. They also take an honest position that most sites in this space will not: a forgotten password on a properly encrypted PDF cannot be recovered, by us or by anyone selling a recovery service, and the only thing that makes an encrypted PDF weak is choosing a short or obvious password in the first place. So alongside the how-to guides there is an explainer on how PDF encryption actually works, because knowing that is what tells you whether the protection you just added is worth anything.
