Why can't I open a WebP file on my computer?

WebP is Google's web image format, and most sites now serve it instead of JPG because it downloads faster. That advantage stops at the browser: Office, older Photoshop builds, a lot of printer software, and plenty of upload forms still reject the extension outright. Converting to JPG is usually quicker than fighting whichever program refused it.

Does converting WebP to JPG lose quality?

Yes, a little. Your WebP was already compressed with loss, and JPG compresses with loss again, so the second pass discards detail the first pass had kept. On a photograph the difference is hard to see at normal viewing size; on a screenshot with small text or a logo with hard edges you may spot faint fuzz along the edges. There is no way around this if the result has to be a JPG.

What happens to a transparent background when I convert to JPG?

It turns white. JPG stores no transparency at all, so the transparent area has to be given a color before the file can be saved, and we fill it with white. On a logo that was cut out to sit on a dark background, this shows up as an obvious white box around the artwork, and nothing you do afterwards can take it back out.

How do I convert WebP to JPG without losing the transparency?

You cannot, and neither can any other converter. The limitation is in the JPG format itself, which has no alpha channel to put the transparency into. If the transparent areas matter, use our WebP to PNG page instead: PNG keeps every transparent pixel and adds no further quality loss, at the cost of a noticeably larger file.

Will the JPG be smaller than the WebP?

Usually not. WebP compresses better than JPG at the same visual quality, which is why websites moved to it, so the JPG often comes back somewhat larger than the file you started with. It is still small in absolute terms, far below what the same image would take as a PNG. Is a JPG from this good enough to print?

For a photo, yes: we do not resize or resample, so the pixel dimensions and detail you upload are what the print shop receives, and the orientation is applied to the pixels so nothing arrives sideways. The output is RGB rather than CMYK, so a commercial printer converts it at their end and colors can shift slightly. And anything that used to be transparent prints as a white rectangle, which is the usual reason a logo looks wrong on a printed page.
