How to remove a password from a PDF you can open

Add the locked PDF
One file, up to 50 MB. There is no preview, because the file is encrypted until the password opens it.
Type the password you already use
This removes protection you are entitled to remove. If the file opens without a password but blocks printing or copying, leave the box empty: that is a different kind of lock and it comes off without one.
Press Remove password
The password is used once to open the file and is never stored.
Expect nothing for a forgotten password
Passwords are not recovered or cracked here, and no tool that promises otherwise is doing anything you would want on a document that matters. If you are adding protection rather than removing it, Protect PDF is the other half of this pair.

Frequently asked questions

Can you unlock a PDF if I forgot the password?

No. This tool removes protection only when you can provide the password. A strongly chosen password on an AES-encrypted PDF cannot be guessed in any realistic time; short or common passwords can fall to guessing tools, but that is not something we do or offer.

My PDF opens fine but will not let me print or copy. Can you fix that?

Yes. That is an owner-only restriction, not a real password. Leave the password field empty and the restrictions are removed from the downloaded copy.

Do you store my password?

No. It is used once, in memory, to open your file, and is never written to our database or logs.

What happens to my file?

Sent over HTTPS, decrypted with your password, and deleted from our server automatically about an hour later. Never sold, never used to train anything.
